The Friends of Elsie Quirk Library sponsor several seasonal book discussion groups here at the library. Of those groups, the Reading Discussion Group will be meeting on Thursday, March 15 at 10:15 a.m. to discuss “Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande.
In this thought-provoking non-fiction read, Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession’s ultimate limitation arguing that quality of life is the desired goal of patients and families when sometimes the goals of medicine seem to frequently run counter to the interest of the human spirit. He offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person’s last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.
If you are interested in participating in this book discussion, stop by the library and check out a copy of “Being Mortal”. It is available in a variety of formats including eBook, audiobook on CD, large print and regular print. To reserve a copy, visit the library website at scgov.net/library.
