All systems are go this summer at the library with “A Universe of Stories” summer reading program. There will be space-themed programs and events for all ages beginning this week and throughout the summer.
“Houston, the library needs teen volunteer help!” Teens ages 13 -18 looking to earn volunteer credit hours for Bright Futures and other scholarships are encouraged to join the adventure at Elsie Quirk Library for the Teen Volunteer Orientation on Saturday, June 1 at 2 p.m.
On Wednesday, June 5 at 1:30 p.m. we will lift off with a “Space Jam” party with DJ Jamal Day. He will keep everyone soaring with an exciting dance party for the whole family! There will be lots of music, glow-in-the-dark fun, a photo booth, snacks and more.
With one small step and one giant leap, teens and tweens will bust a move and learn some slick new dance moves at the Hip Hop Dance Workshop with Sarasota Contemporary Dance on Friday, June 7 at 2 p.m.
Hop in your orbiter and zoom over to the library to pick up your program guide to “A Universe of Stories”. It contains all the details you’ll need to map out your summer space travel.

Saturday
- Teen Volunteer Orientation at 2 p.m.
- Suncoast Humane Society – New Volunteer Orientation at 3 p.m.
Monday
- Forty Carrots Partners in Play 10:15 a.m. OR 11:45 a.m. For children, up to age 5 with a parent or caregiver. A free class for you and your child to enjoy together. Experience new educational activities, join in circle-time fun, meet other families and receive valuable parenting and child development information. Attendance is limited to 12 families per session.
- Summer Breakspot Lunch 12 – 12:45 p.m. For any child 18 and under.
- Monday Night Movies at 5 p.m. In tonight’s film is about a woman who conceives twins through artificial insemination, only to meet the man of her dreams on the very same day. (PG-13, 104 mins.) Contact the library for movie titles.
Tuesday
- Master Gardener Plant Clinic 10 a.m. – Noon. Stop in to get free answers to your Florida gardening and landscape questions. - Health in Motion Bus will be in the library parking lot from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Florida Department of Health of Sarasota County, Health in Motion staff will be on-site to provide no-cost health screenings and referrals for general health and wellness. Nursing staff will help individuals who lack medical insurance find a medical home for ongoing health care through referrals to the Community Health Centers of Sarasota County.

- Englewood Computer Users Group meets at 1 p.m.
- Community Conversation at 1:30 p.m. We want to hear what you have to say. Join us for an informal gathering to talk about our community. Registration is requested and limited to 12 participants.
Wednesday
- Summer Breakspot Lunch 12 – 12:45 p.m. For any child 18 and under.
- Space Jam Party at 1:30 p.m.
- LEGO Club meets at 6 p.m. Children ages 5-12 will have fun getting together with others and sharing ideas, working together, and making new friends. LEGO bricks will be provided – bring your imagination. LEGO creations will be on display in the library until the next meeting date.
Thursday
- Family Storytime at 10:30 a.m. For ages 0-5. Interact and participate with your child in a variety of early literacy and school readiness activities that feature stories, music and movement, and crafts. Today’ theme: “Moon”
- Summer Breakspot Lunch 12 – 12:45 p.m. For any child 18 and under.
- Quirky Knitters meet at 1 p.m. to knit and chat.
Friday
- Summer Breakspot Lunch 12 – 12:45 p.m. For any child 18 and under.
- Hip Hop Dance with Sarasota Contemporary Dance at 2 p.m. Registration is required and limited to 15 teens.
